Receives Mississippi Humanities Council Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our next documentary\u00a0<em>Who\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Wing?<\/em>, a film about an octogenarian Chinese American actress from Marks, Mississippi, has been selected to receive a\u00a0<strong>2025 Documentary Grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Directed by filmmaker Larissa Lam,&nbsp;<em>Who\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Wing?<\/em>&nbsp;tells the remarkable true story of&nbsp;<strong>Virginia Wing<\/strong>, an Asian American woman who rose from small-town Mississippi to Hollywood and beyond \u2014 all while challenging racial and gender stereotypes that continue to persist in the entertainment industry today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re honored that the Mississippi Humanities Council recognizes the importance of preserving and sharing Virginia\u2019s story,\u201d said Larissa Lam. \u201cHer life sheds light on the hidden history of&nbsp;<strong>Asian Americans in Mississippi<\/strong>, and her voice offers a bold challenge to mainstream narratives about women, age, and race.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film explores key themes including<strong>&nbsp;Mississippi Delta history<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Asian American representation in film and television<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>perpetual foreigner stereotype<\/strong>, and the&nbsp;<strong>intersection of race and gender in media<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community Support Needed to Complete the Film<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mississippi Humanities Council grant requires matching funds.
