Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing? Receives Mississippi Humanities Council Grant

Our next documentary Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing?, a film about an octogenarian Chinese American actress from Marks, Mississippi, has been selected to receive a 2025 Documentary Grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council.

Directed by filmmaker Larissa Lam, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing? tells the remarkable true story of Virginia Wing, an Asian American woman who rose from small-town Mississippi to Hollywood and beyond — all while challenging racial and gender stereotypes that continue to persist in the entertainment industry today.

“We’re honored that the Mississippi Humanities Council recognizes the importance of preserving and sharing Virginia’s story,” said Larissa Lam. “Her life sheds light on the hidden history of Asian Americans in Mississippi, and her voice offers a bold challenge to mainstream narratives about women, age, and race.”

The film explores key themes including Mississippi Delta historyAsian American representation in film and television, the perpetual foreigner stereotype, and the intersection of race and gender in media.

Community Support Needed to Complete the Film

The Mississippi Humanities Council grant requires matching funds. Community donations will help the project reach the post-production phase and complete a film that promises to be a powerful addition to the growing body of Asian American documentaries.
